A family lives in Vienna in the year 1900. Vienna is the most vibrant city in Europe, humming with artistic, cultural and intellectual excitement. It is overall a wonderful place to live and enjoy life the way it's supposed to be.
At this point, a tenth of the population are Jews. A generation earlier they had all been granted full civil rights by the Emperor, Franz Josef. Because of this, hundreds of thousands of Jews had fled from the East, and many have now found sanctuary in the old Jewish quarter, Leopoldstadt.
But this was not to last.
Half a century later, this family, like millions of others, has re-discovered what it means to be Jewish in the first half of the 20th century. This tough journey leads to everyone being split up - and how will they know if everyone in their family made it through the tough times?
Leopoldstadt is a passionate drama of love, family and endurance. Based on Stoppard's own family history, it is his most humane and heart-breaking play ever - a tought-provoking story not to be missed.
